Welcome to Never Precious!

Where we tell the stories of how people are carrying culture forward through everyday cooking—thoughtfully, artistically, and with a little bit of humor.

Because we believe that if you want to understand a culture, you have to start in somebody’s kitchen.

Meet the Founder

Hi there. I’m Tyeesha Dixon, the creator of Never Precious, a digital magazine and growing archive of cultural memory built on one philosophy: writing it down imperfectly is better than not writing it down at all.

As a lawyer, I’ve spent the better part of my career translating between worlds. The White House. Chicago City Hall. Big Law conference rooms. In every room, I found myself paying attention to what wasn’t being said, speaking for the people who weren’t in the room.

But a certain kind of truth was always missing in that work. The kind that lives in a grandmother’s hands when she makes a dish she’s never written down. In the rituals that cross oceans and languages and generations — sometimes arriving intact, sometimes transforming on the other side.

That truth is disappearing. Not because people don’t value it. Because life moves fast, and sometimes it’s easier to assume someone else is writing it all down.

Guess what, y’all: nobody else is writing it down.

So we will. Together.

What to Expect

Never Precious is building a living collection of the dishes, wisdom, and ways of living that make up who we are and deserve to outlast us. The anthology grows through contributions from readers, the people we profile, and the places we visit.

This isn’t a history project. It’s a living archive, built by people in the middle of figuring out what from the past they want to carry forward and how that past connects them to the world around them.

Every other week, I’ll tell stories about the things we’re trying not to lose: a recipe, a tradition, a way of cooking, a memory, a connection to place. We’ll follow food across generations and borders, sit with the people who carry these things forward, and pay attention to the details that make them worth remembering.

Stories might take the form of an essay, interview, field dispatch, or something entirely unexpected. Every issue also comes with something practical, like a prompt, a technique, or a small push to help you preserve what’s yours.

Tell us about it here. Never Precious always has room for reflections, essays, recommendations, and all the other ways food helps us make sense of where we come from and where we’re going.
